Mastering Frenzy
| Date: 10-07-2005 Genre: Breakbeat
| I spent a lot of additional time tooling with the thresholds and output ceilings of final mixdowns. For this song I also had lyrics, but decided to do away with them because the mix was too interesting.
A lot of the drum parts are swung to a delayed quantize in order to make it jump around slightly.
The song is very melodic, I like the Dyn Rhodes and organ sounds, and spent a good deal of effort tailoring certain reverbs and other filter textures for the supporting instruments.

Deep House
| Date: 10-06-2005 Genre: House
| So I produced this track custom for a friend down in Nogales. He wanted a deep house sound, something not to clinky and chimey. I added the creepy electronica factor with haunting piano and vintage synths as well as some 70's style electric piano.
You'll hear bits of metal and other assorted scraping drums sounds on a bright break kit. I don't usually make music for live mixing, but this would suit that need well.

Ha.. I think I got the whole track to 0db
| Date: 10-05-2005 Genre: Breakbeat
| Re-mastered as of Oct. 10th
W00t Tonight is the first night I recorded directly into the computer instead of a DAT via MLAN. It was actually more of a pain in the ass then I thought yesterday. Turns out the motif puts out 14 tracks mono so you have to split that up if you want each instrument to be stereo. This limits you to recording a maximum of 7 tracks at once. So I had to record twice. The benefit however is that now I could actually post my cubase project files and let someone remix my music if they wanted. It also made applying effects and things of that nature much easier.
I was able to figure out how to get the track as hot as say... a 50 cent track. I set the limit threshold pretty low and then maximized the wave forms to 0db. No Clipping. I suppose this was a bad track to test this on because the bass is supposed to sound distorted and it threw me off while auditioning it. But the transport meter don't lie.

Bangin Hotness
| Date: 10-04-2005 Genre: Techno
| I guess you could call this track techno, although it sounds more like a mix between Squarepusher and Kraftwerk to me. I've been trying really hard to make the mix as hot as possible, but it's hard without a good limiter before maximization. I got it about as hot as it's going to get with just a multiband eq and maximizer.

Groove Academy
| Date: 10-03-2005 Genre: Bizarre Electronica
| This track combines elements of rock piano, groovable electronica, and techno. It builds and drops and does all kinds other fun things. I was able to fix some of my Cubase problems tonight by messing with VST connections some more. ASIO drivers can be complex when you're switching between outboard hardware and internal auditions. Still haven't had to post to the Cubase mailing list yet... at this point it's a matter of pride :)

Cubase is pissing me off
| Date: 10-02-2005 Genre: Techno
| So I got the surprise tonight of the preview functions for external VSTi plugins not working in the new Cubase. It was alot of fun trying to get the levels proper without an audition volume available. Looks like I've got some reading to do.

Fun With Cubase
| Date: 10-01-2005 Genre: Breakbeat
| So I just bought Cubase SX 3 in order to get my outboard Motif ES mlan16e to work and I spent all of today playing with it. Getting some funny distortion noises in it when recording from the card so I'm assuming I've got some more toying around to do. I'll have to continue using the DAT for now until I get this all squared away.
BTW: This song provides an excellent example of what happens when you get wasted before producing music. Magic eight ball says "Outlook not so good".

Friday Kudos
| Date: 09-30-2005 Genre: Downtempo / Ambient
| So I hope you'll agree this is some of the best ambient work I've ever done. Lots of textures floating in and out, lots of natural sound, lots of groove. The structure is very complete and satisfying. All I need now is an amazon drink.

Feeling Better
| Date: 09-29-2005 Genre: Electronica Jazz
| This song is actually revived from about six months ago. I figured I would make use of some tracks that have been previously unreleased so I can go to bed early tonight and recuperate. The concepts are good, though it's obviously not as polished as my more recent stuff. It was a major pain to bring back from the dead since I did a firmware update on my Motif and all the instrumentation got screwy. Though it's worth bringing to life if only for the jazzy melodies and cool bass solo.

Still sick as a dog
| Date: 09-28-2005 Genre: Breakbeat
| I figured I'd do a very epic, dramatic, vibrant piano ballad and turn it into a hard-hitting breakbeat song. I could've made it a bit longer but I'm really sick tonight and I still have to burn a sample CD and go meet LTJ Bukem backstage at the AZ Sessions Hotel Congress gig to give it to him. He's in from out of town and this is my only chance to do this for a long while.
