Blue Skies   Track Title: Blue Skies

Date: 03-05-2006
Genre: Breakbeat
Now I'm uncertain as to whether or not to classify this work as breakbeat or trip-hop. At some point or another during that 5 minutes, I'm sure you'll agree that it could fit in both genres. I decided this time around to spend quite a good amount of time placing vocal samples and tweaking the hell out of them. This practice strengthens my ability to use the DAW with speed alongside the hardware (Hardware editing is obviously my current strong point).

All counted, I spent roughly 5 hours on the pre-production patterns, 2 hours on the EQ for each of the 17 channels in this mix, and about 3 hours went into finding and laying the vocals.

I've also decided to start using acapellas of well known artists as focal points in my mixes. I'll be distributing them here, and if the artists get pissy with legal, I could always remove them. It's just sooo cool to listen to a talent like Blackalicious or Jay-Z over my songs... I was thinking, even Gang Starr? Maybe they'll just find it flattering and send me some pancakes or something >:P

Temperature
Hundreds of degrees   Track Title: Hundreds of degrees

Date: 04-20-2006
Genre: Breakbeat
I live in Tucson, AZ. If you're not aware of where exactly that is, it's in the desert and it's HOT. When you have no air conditioning and the room has three computers and a bunch of monitors plus keyboards, lamps, and other assorted heat generators running... it's much more hot. Let's say at least 100 degrees!

In any case, this is primarily why I have not been producing music during the past few weeks. Another reason is that I've been spending time on a track exclusively for Holler Saunders , which is now complete.

I've resolved the AC problem recently, so now I can continue on doing what I do.

Enjoy the sweat!

Disco Inferno
Not Enough Burned Buildings   Track Title: Not Enough Burned Buildings

Date: 03-20-2006
Genre: Breakbeat
To make up for the week I lost, I spent some time tonight finishing up a tune that I have been working on and off with during the past couple weeks. A lot of people complained that rap-remixes weren't their cup of tea, so I hope this better suits the Weekly Music general vibe. I'll also say that a lot of other people LOVED it (that's just how these things go.)

Due to the mixture of sentiments, I'll probably begin posting any rap-remixes alongside featured weekly releases so that you can just ignore the stuff you don't like. Or you could download both, whatevs. :P

I really went nutso on the mastering with this current track. Included are some crazy gating techniques on plated vocal reverbs as well as a lot of beatmatching and warping of the vocals to my mix. I keep learning new techniques with track automation and other cool features of Cubase that I had no idea existed until tonight. That makes me happy, because for a while I felt like I was never gonna learn it. I'm steadily approaching 100 tracks composed over here, so I'm pretty pleased with my own progress.

The more I learn, the better things sound... so I suppose if you're listening you'll be hearing major improvements every time you get an email.

Oh yeah, and the vocals on the track are Disco Inferno [ Tramps ].

Word.

Jay Z
Justify My Thug Remix   Track Title: Justify My Thug Remix

Date: 03-19-2006
Genre: Electronica Hip Hop
As the title states, I got a hold of some Jay Z acapellas and have since commenced writing a few remixed versions of my favorite Black Album songs. I might even go as far as to remix the entire black album, but I'm not sure yet. In any case, I love Jay Z.. I've been a fan for years and the least I could do is collaborate. :)

I figured since I can't get a hold of him personally, if his legal team has a problem with this unauthorized version being available for download, I'll remove it.

Anyhow, the track is entirely my creation except for the vocals... Hope you likey.

Devil In the Details   Track Title: Devil In the Details

Date: 03-01-2006
Genre: Breakbeat
Why only Weekly Music now?

My process for producing music has developed into a more linear and well-documented method over the past six months. This produces more consistent results, and I've decided I need more time than just one night to be totally satisfied with my new tracks. I've broken the process down into three stages: Pre-Production, Cubase Processing, and Mastering.

The first stage is obviously where I compose all the melody, rythm, and outer layers of each pattern (verse, chorus, bridge, etc). The second stage has been taking the longest, because lately I've been adding more vocals and sound effects into the songs to liven them up. This is where I drop those in, make sure they are timed correctly, match pitch, etc. I also add compression, EQs, reverbs, and any other effects to each track.

The final stage is where I take the audio mix down and tweak it so that the waveform is "hot" enough to sound good in any CD player, as well as error-free.

Combined, these three stages take around 3-4 days. I also have added time in there for me to review, critique, and better document each track on the blog. I figure this will give each listener better insight into exactly what I'm going through.

Anyhow, I'm planning a major DVD release for April 20th. I'll be keeping you updated on that. I'll begin releasing new tracks EVERY Sunday night from now on!... Best of all, I'll actually get to have a social life too!

Hope you enjoy tonight's track!
Hugs and Kisses!

I was going for that party techno / epic feel. Spent about four hours between the mastering and composition. I ran into some ASIO problems along the way, so I solved those as well. Damn recording from mlan started to skip and it completely freaked me out. Anyhow, I've got to get back in the swing of things here. All these xmas celebrations have made me lazy. ... Hope everyone has had an awesome xmas. I'll be bringing you way more music soon!

Wow, tonight I tried to crash this dell and I was still unsuccessful. There's a total of 4 insert effects (compressions, spectral delays, etc) on each channel of the 10 channel mix. Looks like I'll never have to freeze channels to save RAM again. W00t W00t.

I friggin love this track btw; looks like I'm finally acquiring my own definitive sound.

Back in business   Track Title: Back in business

Date: 12-08-2005
Genre: Techno
I got my brand new dell xps earlier this week and have been preparing it so I can make music again.
My other PC had a motherboard issue that caused it to turn off whenever it decided to.

When I got this working and resolved my MLAN issues tonight, I actually fucking cried. I was so happy. This is what I love to do; so you can imagine that if I can't do it because some stupid computer decides it doesn't want to work properly, I get pretty depressed.

This new PC is a monster 3.2ghz 800mhz FSB with 2 Gigs of ram. I was able to put 3-4 insert effects on every channel (10 in this case) without it crashing once. Absolutely amazing.

With the other computer it would crash using just 3-4 insert effects. This tool is going to allow me to make some pretty awesome shit. Hope you enjoy my efforts.

ALSO: I'll have a ripped DVD of the Weiss Pollack track released on here soon. That way anybody wanting to listen to it on a surround sound system can just burn it and enjoy!

I am finally complete with the Weiss Pollack track. It's taken pretty much all of my resources up for the past week. This is the mp3 stereo interleaved version of the track, which is actually in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound (although unless you want to download the DVD you can't listen to that format). It will be used for an interactive optical illusion/ holographic installation at the Weiss Pollack Galleries in downtown Chelsea New York City. The event takes place November 17th. Anyway, the track came out good. Still grooving.

I'm really feeling it tonight. Maybe that's because I just installed two gigs of ram and now I don't have to worry so much about crashing because of insert fx. Or maybe it's because I got back to focusing on just the music, less lyrics. I don't know. I'm just happy with the way this came out.
I try to keep the SGR project growing in many directions. Fast, funky electronica will always be one of them.

The past three days have revolved around data storage and solutions to driver conflict. I think we're all sorted out for now, though I'm not certain I've found a permanent storage solution yet.

Burning DVD sets as backup for my material seems to be the best route. I'd like for anyone to be able to easily retrieve Cubase source files from me later if they wish to collaborate and/or modify the music.

So this is definitely a rough cut, but I was trying to be a little out of the ordinary tonight. I'd like to push my limits in jazz a bit further. Believe it or not I actually wrote poetic verses for the whole song. I just couldn't get them to work in such a short time frame. I suppose what I was trying to do would be better suited for a weekend when I have more time.

How fast can I make a techno track?
Dern   Track Title: Dern

Date: 10-15-2005
Genre: Techno
So this is an exercise called how fast can I make a decent techno track. It seemed to work out okay. I figured since I spent so much time on the last one I'd do something more simple and a bit more characteristic of the general techno population. i.e.- more repetitive.

BTW: It took 95 minutes.

Begin me   Track Title: Begin me

Date: 10-14-2005
Genre: Breakbeat
So I just purchased NightlyMusic.com

I'm going to build a bigger, better site with more features and I plan on releasing a CD as well. It's too soon to even plan dates for the release and move-over. But I think Nightly Music is a more fitting environment for what I am doing. It just seems to make more sense.

The track here I worked on for two days. Mostly because I wanted to do vocals for it and I'm extremely critical of my own voice. This track disorients my voice but leaves enough for you to hold on to and cherish forever. Or not?

Good thing I don't take myself seriously or anything.

You Frown Sometimes   Track Title: You Frown Sometimes

Date: 10-13-2005
Genre: Bizarre Electronica
So this track combines several different styles: It's got a jazz feel, breakbeat drum textures, and a drum n' bass tempo (185bpm, double that of hip hop).
I worked really hard to get it to sound fluid. Also the mastering is pretty pristine. Though I'm still testing different limiting techniques so I can get the track hotter without distortion or digital clipping. I guess that's why it is 2:11am in the morning and I'm still working. That and I'm nuts.

Date: 10-11-2005
Genre: Depressing Electronica
Tonight I took a totally different approach than the norm, because that is how you learn. The mastering sequence is completely unique and the track sounds better as far as mix and master goes than any other thus far IMO.

As for the rest of it, I used VERY LITTLE quantize throughout, so it has a pretty intense live feel.
I'm excited to have released such a good sounding track tonight.

Worked with Rachel on Sunday, we finished tonight's release in about Six hours. I was burnt out yesterday so I held off on mastering it until today. That and I didn't want to rush production of such a fine track.

I'm lucky to work with such a talented vocalist. (and she also helped with production)

PS- I don't want to give the theme away, but I think it's about turtles fucking. hahah

You Were Wrong   Track Title: You Were Wrong

Date: 10-07-2005
Genre: Breakbeat
I spent a lot of additional time tooling with the thresholds and output ceilings of final mixdowns. For this song I also had lyrics, but decided to do away with them because the mix was too interesting.
A lot of the drum parts are swung to a delayed quantize in order to make it jump around slightly.

The song is very melodic, I like the Dyn Rhodes and organ sounds, and spent a good deal of effort tailoring certain reverbs and other filter textures for the supporting instruments.

Deep House
Saunders   Track Title: Saunders

Date: 10-06-2005
Genre: House
So I produced this track custom for a friend down in Nogales. He wanted a deep house sound, something not to clinky and chimey. I added the creepy electronica factor with haunting piano and vintage synths as well as some 70's style electric piano.
You'll hear bits of metal and other assorted scraping drums sounds on a bright break kit. I don't usually make music for live mixing, but this would suit that need well.

Feek Attack   Track Title: Feek Attack

Date: 10-05-2005
Genre: Breakbeat
Re-mastered as of Oct. 10th

W00t Tonight is the first night I recorded directly into the computer instead of a DAT via MLAN. It was actually more of a pain in the ass then I thought yesterday. Turns out the motif puts out 14 tracks mono so you have to split that up if you want each instrument to be stereo. This limits you to recording a maximum of 7 tracks at once. So I had to record twice. The benefit however is that now I could actually post my cubase project files and let someone remix my music if they wanted. It also made applying effects and things of that nature much easier.

I was able to figure out how to get the track as hot as say... a 50 cent track. I set the limit threshold pretty low and then maximized the wave forms to 0db. No Clipping. I suppose this was a bad track to test this on because the bass is supposed to sound distorted and it threw me off while auditioning it. But the transport meter don't lie.

Jiniuado   Track Title: Jiniuado

Date: 10-04-2005
Genre: Techno
I guess you could call this track techno, although it sounds more like a mix between Squarepusher and Kraftwerk to me. I've been trying really hard to make the mix as hot as possible, but it's hard without a good limiter before maximization. I got it about as hot as it's going to get with just a multiband eq and maximizer.

This track combines elements of rock piano, groovable electronica, and techno. It builds and drops and does all kinds other fun things. I was able to fix some of my Cubase problems tonight by messing with VST connections some more. ASIO drivers can be complex when you're switching between outboard hardware and internal auditions. So I just bought Cubase SX 3 in order to get my outboard Motif ES mlan16e to work and I spent all of today playing with it. Getting some funny distortion noises in it when recording from the card so I'm assuming I've got some more toying around to do. I'll have to continue using the DAT for now until I get this all squared away.

BTW: This song provides an excellent example of what happens when you get wasted before producing music. Magic eight ball says "Outlook not so good".

Date: 09-29-2005
Genre: Electronica Jazz
This song is actually revived from about six months ago. I figured I would make use of some tracks that have been previously unreleased so I can go to bed early tonight and recuperate. The concepts are good, though it's obviously not as polished as my more recent stuff. It was a major pain to bring back from the dead since I did a firmware update on my Motif and all the instrumentation got screwy. Though it's worth bringing to life if only for the jazzy melodies and cool bass solo.

Young Luck   Track Title: Young Luck

Date: 09-22-2005
Genre: Electronica Jazz
Most times in order to progress as a musician, you have to learn tremendous amounts of information quickly. Tonight I feel I bridged some sort of gap that I may have been missing for some time. This song uses swing quantization to produce more of a live feel. I added the synth towards the end just to say to the listener: "Hey, this is still electronic, BTW".

Wrangled Fashion
Fact March   Track Title: Fact March

Date: 09-21-2005
Genre: Techno
In the past I've done music for fashion shows. I think I'd like to get into this scene again. Namely because I enjoy seeing hot models in stride to my productions. I also say this cause I think this song would be perfect for such an event.

Lots of influences here. Minimal funkiness, lots of ambient, lots of techno, lots of creep/ beauty.

Break it up with funk
Chance   Track Title: Chance

Date: 09-20-2005
Genre: Electronica Funk
I would say that this is one of my best implementations of funk and electronica mixed together. Good dynamics, tight changes, and interesting vocals. Hope you enjoy it.

Unheard   Track Title: Unheard

Date: 09-19-2005
Genre: Electronica Jazz
This song is definitely pleasant and happy, very strong guitar sequence has a driving melody and holds well with the demeanor of the tune. I tried to keep it as high-fi electric as possible, while still blending in organic jazz scores.

Auditioning quite the success
Till Morning   Track Title: Till Morning

Date: 09-18-2005
Genre: Downtempo / Ambient
Well today I auditioned a wonderfully strong vocalist from phoenix. We worked together in producing the melody, rhythm, and structure of the song. Composition time was roughly 2 hours. About 3 hours post production work including mixing, mastering, and special effects.

How about some more ambient
Not a God   Track Title: Not a God

Date: 09-17-2005
Genre: Downtempo / Ambient
I've really been into ambient lately as you can see. There's been a great discussion going on about just what ambient really is over at Yay Hooray.

Also, that's my voice on the track.

Ambilence   Track Title: Ambilence

Date: 09-16-2005
Genre: Downtempo / Ambient
This song is the first in my collection that actually delves into true ambient format. Lots of different layers and grooves. I employed several tricks such as delay filtering on the drums to get the fluid syncopation and other such live sounding entities.

I also worked on a rock song with Nikolasvice. We should have that done soon, and with live guitar. yay!

Something special
A metaphor for nothing   Track Title: A metaphor for nothing

Date: 09-15-2005
Genre: Electronica Jazz
Well I got the file size and length to match unintentionally this time, aren't I special. :)
Very cool 1967 moog sounds in this one, as well as some pretty groovy organ. I tried to not make it sound like new-wave jazz, it's very difficult not to be cheesy. Pretty happy with the way this came out.

On a side note, I'm ranked above 250 out of 16,000 electronica tracks in the ambient, breakbeat, dance, and downtempo categories at sound click.

Grunge Electric Low-fi
Quick Draw   Track Title: Quick Draw

Date: 09-14-2005
Genre: Techno
So I spent lots of time outputting this stuff to mp3 right? Yep. Anyhow, I was accidentally encoding them at 33.2 instead of 44.1 khz. That made everything speed up really fast for certain players.
I have to re-encode about 11 more songs, did six tonight. (yah, sucks to be me)

Oh, and that kind of inspired me to write something low-fi.

Psycho babble
Life is a fucking Petree Dish   Track Title: Life is a fucking Petree Dish

Date: 09-13-2005
Genre: Bizarre Electronica
This track is on drugs. I don't know which ones, but it's definitely on drugs. I hope it makes you want to play the harmonica and chase after zebra fish. I suppose morbid electronic breakbeat combined with elements of psycho babble psy-trance would have been a more fitting description.

*Note: re-released with some filter fixes

Shadow Opera   Track Title: Shadow Opera

Date: 09-12-2005
Genre: Downtempo / Ambient
I definitely had a difficult time keeping my recording session under six hours tonight with this track. I got so into it that I didn't even want to digest food. My aim was to produce a low-fi, groovable, ambient palette of sounds. Notice the different electronic and organic textures moving in and out of a very wide sound scape.

Also: Welcome Yay Hooray!

Electronic Interpretations
K.C. Masterpiece Funk   Track Title: K.C. Masterpiece Funk

Date: 09-11-2005
Genre: Techno
This is a rich, vibrant and somewhat lucious jazz platform, shelved by hard electronica and ambience. As always, this song was composed from the ground up. No measure samples or other midi data was recycled.

Hope you enjoy my efforts.

Stiff Electronica Funk
Marange   Track Title: Marange

Date: 09-10-2005
Genre: Electronica Funk
This track was done as an audition piece featuring "Katois". Took us roughly five hours. It's funk electronica, a sort of live, filter rich vocal environment. There's stiff bass and electrical hypnotism going on in this track for certain.

Date: 09-09-2005

I've been busting my ass updating firmware, drivers, and applications all night. Can't seem to get MLan to work yet. To bad I can't read japanese.

Beyond this, I figured you all needed something different. This track will be a good starting point for audition material: We're currently looking for female vocalists.

Maybe I'll do a follow up on this one.

Genre: Breakbeat
I'm feeling good tonight, even though I hardly got any sleep last night. I was so excited about releasing this song today that I even came home at lunch to work on it. (Yeah, I work full time)

Was going for the vocal style of Shpongle and the groove of Amon Tobin. One day I aspire to be as good as either of them. Enjoy.

Kerouac   Track Title: Kerouac

Date: 09-06-2005
Genre: Breakbeat
This friday I'm picking up that new mlan16e card from Guitar Center. I am simply beaming with excitement. Anyhow, the new track definitely has some drum n' bass influences; at least in the first part. Then it switches to more funky breakbeat. I used some hippo sounds and other various animal noises in post-production. You have absolutely no idea how hard it was for me to hold back using Madonna in this track. I have lots of her acapellas and for some reason they seemed to fit really well. I think she would get hella pissed at me though. ;)

UPDATE: Did you know that the smoking gun just released jack kerouac's military record?

Miss You Forever   Track Title: Miss You Forever

Date: 09-05-2005
Genre: Techno
So I went to the pistol range for a while today, that was fun. Then I came back and made this track. It's some of the better vocal manipulation I think I've done. I also was able to utilize some plugins to circumvent mastering issues. I just uploaded newly mastered versions of Celly, Jarvex, Gland, and Digital Whores. I think they were good enough to spend the time re-mastering.

Begerf   Track Title: Begerf

Date: 08-30-2005
Genre: Electronica Funk
I have this friend named "Red". He is really funny when he gets drunk because he yells "Begerf" really loudly at unsuspecting victims. When the syncopation hits on this track, it reminds me of the sound he makes. Oh bother, I had to name it that.

Mastering is a learning curve
Jioooooooooolo   Track Title: Jioooooooooolo

Date: 08-29-2005
Genre: Electronica Funk
Track is free of glitches. Track is funky as hell. I am still however, completely dissatisfied with the volume of the mastering. This problem occurs (I believe) because of the transition between Analog/ Digital. I currently use this Roland VS-890 piece of shit to master my tracks. It master them at -4db ... and that's just too low. Since I export the audio as an interleaved mix and bring it into cubase from there, I really can't master it any higher or it will peak the mix.

Anyhow, a couple more weeks of this crap and then I'll be purchasing an mlan16e firewire. Since this takes the analog conversion out of the picture, all tracks from that point on should be mastered proper. (I hope)

Darby   Track Title: Darby

Date: 08-27-2005
Genre: Latin
Clay Steele and I made this track tonight. Starts out with a latin them and progress to a more standard techno feel. The ideas are great but we're still getting pissed off about the glitches in motif. I think I finally figured out why it's glitching like that between patterns though. Seems to be a multi-instrument issue.

Illiderado   Track Title: Illiderado

Date: 08-25-2005
Genre: Techno
Shazam. Melee me tota, or my own personal language of funny words / the lack of song naming conventions - has produced this wonderful track label. That pounding, whacking, thumping breakbeat kit that hits measure 17 sooo hard really turns me on. Oh, and might I add I really like the melody that comes in around 3 min.

Protect the Lick   Track Title: Protect the Lick

Date: 08-24-2005

Wet Landings   Track Title: Wet Landings

Date: 08-22-2005
Genre: Creepy
The aim here was to produce a very wet, fairy tale with creepy intent. This track definitely has breakbeat influences and although it is not in a standard format, has enough potential and listenablity to make me satisfied. Quite a bit of effort went into it's production.

Yay! Detroit   Track Title: Yay! Detroit

Date: 08-21-2005
Genre: Creepy
As a supplement to your daily diet of ridiculous electronica, I've included this song as a testbed for my own voice. It combines a relaxed ambient feel with trip-hop and breakbeat. You'll hear muted trumpet, vibes, large room kits and harp alongside my vocals.

When Animals Attack the Church   Track Title: When Animals Attack the Church

Date: 08-20-2005
Genre: Creepy
I was fooling around with gregorian chant and other assorted samples while writing this. The track really has no format other than groove. You'll hear lions roars, wishy washy fluids, and some odd chirping. I'm looking to make more music in the standard thirty-two measure section format as opposed to this insanity. That will happen soon.

Old Stuff - My Favorite of this release
Por Una Cabeza   Track Title: Por Una Cabeza

Date: 08-22-2004
Genre: Electronica Jazz
If I had to pick a favorite of this release, I would definitely choose this one. In one of the chorus' I added that cool tango melody from the "True Lies" movie. What's cools is that I turned it into breakbeat/ jazz. It's also not in the same time signature.

Believe it or not: I put a harmonica in this song. Way to go harmonicas! It's funny to look back on this stuff because it's all very glitchy. You're definitely not supposed to use multiple instruments on the same track on the Motif. I've learned that lesson the hard way.
